Ski jumping legend Eddie the Eagle talks travels, including his love for Russia and China and the odd places he’s slept… from cowsheds to a mental health hospital in Finland

Eddie the Eagle checks in to our travel Q&A

This week, ski jumping legend Eddie the Eagle checks in to our travel Q&A.

He talks about his favourite ski resorts, his dream holiday destinations – and more…

First holiday memories?

When I was a child, most years we used to go to a static caravan. That could be in places like Tenby, Saundersfoot and sometimes Devon or Cornwall.

First overseas holiday?

A school ski trip when I was 13, to Andalo in the Italian Alps.

Memorable UK adventure?

I’ve done John O’Groats to Land’s End on a bike, cycling on B roads. It was truly great.

Best holiday experience?

I went to Calgary for the 20th anniversary of the Winter Olympics. I skied in Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper, and did some dog sledding and horse riding on snow — I had a whale of a time.

Favourite ski resorts?

Courchevel, but it’s so expensive and you have to speak Russian rather than French there now. I also love Morzine and Avoriaz, and a place called Kicking Horse in Canada.

Dream holiday destinations?

Russia and I’d also love to go to China again. I went for the [Eddie The Eagle] film premiere, but I was only in Beijing for a day.

Oddest place you have slept in?

When I was racing in Europe, I slept mostly in the back of my car and sometimes in cowsheds, barns and basements. And I once slept in a mental health hospital in Finland.

Budget or luxury travel?

I’m more towards budget because my money will go further and I have a better experience. You catch buses and meet normal people: if you only stay in five-star hotels, you only meet rich people.
