Rahul Dravid applies for coach’s job; BCCI wants either VVS Laxman or Anil Kumble for NCA | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Rahul Dravid has submitted his application for the job of becoming India’s senior men’s team head coach on Tuesday.
The former India captain, who is presently serving as the head of cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), is all set to take over the reins of the Indian team from Ravi Shastri after the ongoing T20 World Cup. Paras Mhambrey, his trusted lieutenant while working on India’s developmental sides, is also all set to become the bowling coach replacing Bharat Arun.

TOI was first to report on October 16 that Dravid had agreed to BCCI’s offer after a marathon meeting with president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah in Dubai on the night of IPL final on October 15. Dravid and his support staff will be given a two-year contract till the 2023 World Cup in India. Dravid will draw a salary of Rs 10 crore. The board has still not made up its mind on the fielding coach to replace R Sridhar.

Abhay Sharma, who has formed Dravid’s core team over the last six years, is interested to take up the job. Former India wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra too has applied for the job.
“Dravid had agreed to become the coach in Dubai itself. All terms of his appointment were finalized with his approval. This is just a formality that needs to be done as per BCCI constitution. The board will have to find a new Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) member to replace Madan Lal who is now more than 70 years old,” a top BCCI official told TOI on Tuesday.

BCCI to approach Laxman, Kumble for NCA job

After managing to convince Dravid for the head coach’s job, BCCI is now training its focus on bringing a stalwart to replace him as the head of cricket at NCA. TOI understands that the board is keen to have either of Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman to take up the job at NCA.

TOI has learnt that Laxman was a backup to Dravid for the Team India job. He was told if Dravid declined the offer, he would be the frontrunner. Laxman was ready to take up Team India assignment but was reluctant to be NCA head as that would have meant shifting his base from Hyderabad to Bengaluru.
But it has emerged that Laxman will be approached one more time before the board goes to Kumble. “BCCI wants to deploy the services of its greats. Kumble is a very good option and he is based out of Bengaluru too. He is a tough hard taskmaster and disciplinarian. The next generation will benefit from him,” the official said.
