Elon Musk gives ‘final’ date for removing legacy blue ticks – Times of India

Elon Musk had announced that Twitter will remove blue checks for legacy handles from April 1 but that didn’t happen. It was reported that the social media company did not have the backend technology to remove legacy blue ticks from accounts at once, hence it was deduced that the legacy ticks would remain for some time. Musk has now come up with a new date for the removal of legacy Blue ticks.
“Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20 [April 20],” Musk tweeted. Legacy blue ticks are the checks that were previously given to special accounts which ‘earned’ the verification badge even if they did not pay for a Twitter Blue subscription.
Multiple reports also suggested that Musk posted a tweet in which he had said the company would give verified accounts “a few weeks grace, unless they tell they won’t pay now, in which we will remove it.” He later deleted the tweet.
Why Twitter is removing legacy Blue ticks
Twitter has been struggling with revenue and the ‘new’ Blue subscription model is one of the ways that could help the company generate some revenue, especially since several companies have paused advertising on the platform.
Earlier this year, Musk valued Twitter at about $20 billion – $24 billion less than the amount ($44 billion) he paid to buy the company in October last year.
Pushback against paid verifications
Some celebrities and news organisations have rejected the idea of paying for a blue tick saying that the check mark no longer supports credibility as anyone can get it through the Blue subscription. This list includes NBA star LeBron James, actor William Shatner, The White House, and The New York Times, among others.
Twitter also saw several celebrities quitting the platform and flocking to rival social media platforms when the billionaire took over the company in October last year.
