FEMAIL taste tests Heinz Terry’s Christmas Orange Mayonnaise

Bridie Pearson-Jones tries Heinz’s Terry’s Chocolate Orange Mayo

I don’t have a massive sweet tooth, but I do enjoy a good chocolate spread – particularly a posh dark chocolate nut butter.

So I thought this would definitely be worth a try, I like mayo, I like chocolate orange, surely I’d like them together?

Upon opening the jar I was a little more sceptical. It didn’t look appetising.

The texture looked like a very thin mayonnaise and looked overly oily (after checking the ingredients, I realised it was 68% rapeseed oil).

But I kept on going and spread a very thin layer across a toasted bagel.

'The flavour is just like a Terry's Chocolate Orange, but the texture is more like butter than mayo - I honestly think if I'd melted down a chocolate orange an added a bit of butter I'd have made a similar concoction' Bridie said

It was so oily in texture it actually glistened when spread across my bagel.

While it was tasty – and sure to be a hit with chocolate orange fans – it was VERY rich. I couldn’t finish more than half a bagel and I couldn’t see myself reaching for the jar and eating it with a spoon like I have to stop myself doing with Nutella.

Perhaps, unless you’re a hardcore chocolate orange fan, it would be better used as an ingredient rather than a toast topper.

It would would go beautifully in a chocolate mayonnaise cake (I always love adding a touch of citrus to a chocolate recipe for a touch of sharpness).

I can’t see it replacing my beloved Bonne Maman Hazelnut Chocolate Spread anytime soon –     but it still gets a very solid 3 stars – I’d give it 3.5 if i could.
