Australian chocolate bar Polly Waffle, is finally returning to supermarket shelves – but there’s a twist

Nostalgic Aussies are sharing their excitement after finding out an old chocolate bar is returning to supermarket shelves – but not in the way most remember it.

Polly Waffles were discontinued in 2009 but in April they are making a comeback in a new bite-sized form.

Some fans are rejoicing over the resurrection of the sweet treat but others aren’t happy and are questioning why the Polly Waffle couldn’t return in its original form.

The confectionary was first introduced in 1947 and contained a marshmallow and wafer filling coated in milk chocolate.

The treat was later pulled from supermarket shelves due to poor sales.

In 2019 South Australian chocolate company Robern Menz, the same brand behind Violet Crumble, acquired the rights to remake the bar.

Instead of the traditional bar, Polly Waffles will be available as milk chocolate and wafer coated marshmallow bites.

Menz CEO, Phil Sims said the chocolate is due to be back by late April after complications caused by the Covid pandemic thwarted production.

‘Polly Waffle had not been produced in more than ten years when we acquired it, so we essentially had to start from scratch to find out how we could produce it at our South Australian factory,’ he said.

‘What we couldn’t anticipate was the number of variables out of our control, from COVID border closures restricting access to equipment, or updated retailer expectations.’

Sims claimed recreating the original bar would require more time and cost without guaranteeing the same Polly Waffle taste and quality Aussies remember.

‘It was so important to us that we didn’t put a subpar product in the market, especially one as much loved as Polly Waffle,’ he said.

‘Creating a Polly Waffle Bite was the most responsible way to make bringing back the iconic brand a reality.’

Many Aussies online were stoked about the comeback saying they couldn’t wait to try the redesigned treat.

‘Omg, get in my belly,’ one foodie said and another added: ‘Yes, I’ve been waiting for this!’.

‘Sooo excited to try these! And gluten free as well, that’s amazing!’ a third wrote.

‘So happy to have them back in whatever shape they come in,’ someone replied.

However others said they had ‘mixed feelings’ and were ‘disappointed’ the chocolate wouldn’t be returning in its original form.

‘If they cant make the bar, these wont come close clearly. And they’ll be $10 a bag,’ one man complained.

‘They tried making the bar but it was subpar. This better be amazing,’ a second said.

‘Of course I will try them but I have serious doubts that they have managed to replicate the perfect chocolate to wafer to marshmallow ratio in a bite sized ball,’ a third added.
