A 4th Quarter resurgence saw the Boston Celtics pick up a critical Game 1 win on the road to open this year’s NBA Finals. After handing the Golden State Warriors their first Game 1 playoff loss in Oracle, the Celtics look to match the feat and return to Boston with a 2-0 series lead.
Despite a late game collapse, sportsbooks are giving the Warriors a slight nod. NBA odds are offering Golden State at -4.5, with the Game 2 total set at 214.5 points.
Though not evident by the final score, Golden State appeared to have the game under control, or at least within reach for the majority of the series opener. Few could predict that Boston would rally to erase a 12-point deficit in route to a 40-point quarter. The team went an impressive 9-of-12 beyond the arc in the final 12 minutes, outscoring the Warriors 40-16 down the stretch.
4th Quarter Resurgence Despite Tatum’s Struggles
It was this beyond the arc effort that blew this game wide open, and Golden State must look to better defend Al Horford and Derrick White, as the duo went 11-of-16 from three to compensate for Jayson Tatum’s lackluster outing.
Jayson Tatum has solidified his position as the leader for this team, but the young star failed to find his stroke in his NBA Finals debut. The small forward was 3-of-17 on the night (17.6%), but managed to record 13 assist in the effort.
His shooting struggles can serve as both a positive and a negative for Celtics backers, as the team managed to dazzle in his relative absence to secure a commanding victory with their backs against the wall. It allowed for his Celtic teammates to find their stroke and develop valuable playoff confidence in the process. If Jayson can find his rhythm early on, the Warriors defense will be limited in their ability to contain both him and Jaylen Brown knowing that Boston has proven deep firepower.
Still, the Boston did manage to pad the stat lines late in the game when things were already well out of reach, and its hard to expect both Horford and White to put up similar numbers in a tightly contested battle down the stretch.
What Boston managed to do in the 4th, Steph succeeded at in the game’s opening quarter. Curry nailed six 3-pointers in the game’s 1st quarter, adding another NBA record to his name in the process. His hand quickly cooled, however, as he finished 7-of-14 from three, totaling 34 points on the evening.
Outside of the opening 12 minutes, Curry only hit a single 3-pointer and 13 points. The league’s highest player will need to earn his paycheck in a ‘must win’ situation tonight. This becomes even more imperative if Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole continue to struggle, and we know he wont get much offensive assistance from Draymond Green.
Celtics Warriors Game 2 Picks
The Warriors just seem to manage to get things done, and while I will never advocate betting on a feeling, the team has gone 27-19-2 ATS when favored at home.
Boston sports an even more impressive 24-5-1 ATS record on the road when facing +.500 teams on the road, but too many things went right for them in the series opener.
These teams boast the league’s best defensive units, and expect the proper adjustments to be made to limit the blowout surges each surrendered at different points in the game.
Boston picks up a much needed win on the road, but Golden State evens the series tonight and covers the spread.
Also look at the under, as defensive adjustments slow the game.
