Rashida Jones is heading back to the small screen, signing on to star in the new Apple TV Plus series Sunny.

The streaming service handed out a 10-episode series order for the show, based on the 2018 novel The Dark Manual by Colin O’Sullivan, via Deadline

Jones will also serve as an executive producer on the series, with A24 coming aboard to produce the series as well.

The book follows Suzie (Jones), an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash.

As a bizarre ‘consolation,’ Suzie is given an advanced new robot dubbed Sunny, part of a line of new domestic robots her husband’s company is making.

While Suzie first resents Sunny for trying to console her, they ultimately form a unique bond and slowly start to uncover what really happened to her family.

Katie Robbins (The Affair, The Last Tycoon) wrote the pilot script and will executive produce the series alongside Jones and Lucy Tcherniak (Station Eleven), who is attached to direct.

Ravi Nandan and Jess Lubben will also serve as executive producers for A24, with the show expected to film in Japan.

The show comes on the heels of Jones’ first collaboration with both Apple and A24, the 2020 Sofia Coppola film On the Rocks.

She’s also currently filming another Apple TV Plus series, Wool, based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy novels.

She’s also featured in the series Toast of Tinseltown and recently voiced Mia on Duncanville.  

The actress also voiced Adult Santamonica on the Black-ish spin-off Mixed-Ish in a 2021 episode.

She also voiced Cheryl in an episode of the Netflix animated series Waffles + Mocchi. 

Robbins was a staff writer on The Last Tycoon and The Affair, while also serving as a consulting producer on the Party of Five reboot. 

Tcherniak has directed episodes of The End of the F***ing World, Wanderlust, Chambers, Station Eleven and four of the six episodes of Peacock’s Angelyne mini-series, debuting later this year.
