His love for military vehicles famously helped lead to the introduction of consumer-friendly Hummer SUVs.

But Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared to be favoring one of his military-grade Humvees on Thursday when he took a relaxing drive through Santa Monica.

The 74-year-old actor and former California governor looked as rugged as the action heroes he has played in the past as he smoked a thick cigar behind the wheel.

Schwarzenegger looked particularly rugged with his thick stubble.

He had on a simple black T-shirt and sported a luxury wristwatch with a leather band, as well as sunglasses.

He was driving one of his classic green Humvees, which featured detachable doors and a small pickup bed in the back.

The rugged vehicle is part of a fleeting of other Humvees and newer Hummers, which sacrifice the original’s off-road capabilities in exchange for more room and luxurious features.

Schwarzenegger first became transfixed by the Humvee when he spotted one in 1990 while filming his comedy Kindergarten Cop.

After lobbying for its original manufacturer, AM General, to make a civilian version, Schwarzenegger purchased the first two vehicles, renamed Hummer H1s.

The original H1s looked similar to military vehicles, but when General Motors purchased the brand from AM General in 1999, they soon launched the larger H2 and H3 SUV lines.

Although the gas guzzlers would seem at odds with the former governor’s commitment to combating climate change, he has outfitted many of his Humvees with clean fuel technologies.

During his run for governor, Schwarzenegger announced plans to convert one of his vehicles to run on hydrogen, which reportedly cost around $21,000 at the time.

He has since converted some of his Humvees and Hummers to run on electric power.

The green model he was driving on Thursday was at one point run on vegetable oil, though it’s unclear if he has converted it again more recently.

When he’s not riding around in his imposing vehicles, Schwarzenegger likes to take in coastal bike rides, often with his children joining him.

However, he’s had to slow down his workouts in recent years to accommodate his aging body.

‘Physically, you just have to accept reality and do the best you can,’ he told Men’s Health earlier this month. ‘It is always difficult to accept that you aren’t where you once were.

‘More than 2,000,000 Americans over 65 suffer from depression,’ he added. ‘I think a lot of that comes from hormonal changes that cause us to lose muscle over time.’

Although he still works out daily, he said he stopped using free weights and now uses weight machines to decrease his chances of injuring himself.

Instead of packing on muscle like he did in his heyday as a bodybuilder and an action film star, he’s focused more on staying lean and mobile.

Earlier this month, Schwarzenegger was seen in what appeared to be the same vehicle with his girlfriend, physical therapist Heather Milligan, who is 27 years his junior.

He was previously married to journalist Maria Shriver from 1986 until their separation in 2011, after she learned that he had fathered a child with their housekeeper.

They share four children, including Katherine, 31, Christina, 30, Patrick, 28, and Christopher, 24, and he also shares his son Joseph Baena, 24, with Mildred Baena.
