‘Power of the Dog,’ ‘Dune,’ ‘West Side Story’ Lead 2022 Oscar Nominees

The Power of the Dog, Dune, and West Side Story are among the leaders of this year’s Oscar nominees, which were announced Tuesday morning, Feb. 8

All three films will vie for Best Picture, where they’ll be up against Belfast, Coda, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Licorice Pizza, and Nightmare Alley. Power of the Dog filmmaker Jane Campion and West Side Story’s Steven Spielberg were both nominated for Best Director as well, and they’ll go up against Kenneth Branagh for Belfast,  Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car, and Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza.

The Power of the Dog led all Oscar nominees this year with 12, racking up looks in several production categories, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay for Campion and Best Score for Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood (this is Greenwood’s second Oscar nom following The Phantom Thread). The film’s stars also earned acting nominations, with Kirsten Dunst securing her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while Benedict Cumberbatch is up for Best Actor, and both Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee will compete for Best Supporting Actor.

In the Best Actor category, Cumberbatch will compete against Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos, Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick… Boom!, Will Smith for King Richard, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth. And in the Best Actress category, Jessica Chastain was nominated for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter, Penélope Cruz for Parallel Mothers, Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos, and Kristen Stewart for Spencer.

For Best Supporting Actor, Plemons and Smit-McPhee will be up against Ciarán Hinds for Belfast, Troy Kotsur for Coda, and J.K. Simmons for Being the Ricardos. And in the Supporting Actress category, Dunst will compete against Jessie Buckley for The Lost Daughter, Ariana DeBose for West Side Story, Judi Dench for Belfast, and Aunjanue Ellis for King Richard.

For Best Original Screenplay, Belfast will be up against Don’t Look Up, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and The Worst Person in the World. And in the Best Adapted Screenplay category, the nominees were Dune, Coda, Drive My Car, The Lost Daughter, and The Power of the Dog.

In the Best Documentary (Feature) category, Questlove secured an Oscar nomination for his directorial debut, Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). The other nominees include Ascension, Attica, Flee, and Writing With Fire.

And Beyoncé earned her first Oscar nomination, picking up a Best Original Song look with Dixson for “Be Alive” from King Richard. In that category, she’ll compete against second-time nominee Lin-Manuel Miranda, up for “Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto, as well as Billie Eilish and Finneas for “No Time to Die” (No Time to Die), Van Morrison for “Down to Joy” (Belfast), and perennial Best Original Song hopeful Diane Warren, who secured her 13th Oscar nomination for “Somehow You Do” from Four Good Days.

The 94th Oscars will take place on March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. This will be the first Oscars since 2018 to have a host, although an MC for the night has yet to be announced.
